Organizations Working to Protect Our Oceans

There are many non-profits and government agencies whose mission is to protect our coastlines. These organizations are great places to turn to for more information about current projects or ways you can get more involved. Donations are another simple way you can show your support for this important goal.

Greenpeace: This old staple for environmental protection is a good place to turn to if you’re interested in making a contribution; the nonprofit has a worldwide infrastructure and base of supporters, but still remains unwaveringly committed to its goals. “Defending our oceans” is their international campaign to protect and clean up our world’s watery depths.

Scripps Institute of Oceanography: This research center associated with the University of California San Diego is one of the biggest and oldest places for ocean research and education in the world. Their research helps shed light on the degradation of the ocean, and lends scientific backing to the call to protect it.

Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies: This research group studies the unique ecosystem of Cape Cod and the marine animals of the northeast seaboard. The center works with the Coast Guard, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and others to promote stewardship of the ocean.

Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment: The fragile ecosystem of the Arctic is one of the most endangered by global warming. This organization works to bring attention to these icy environs and supports sustainable use of its marine environment.

Census of Marine Life: This group is a collaborative network of over 80 ocean researchers around the world. Their goal is to work together to answer questions about the ocean and its diversity, and to protect it.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Services Center: The NOAA is a part of the U.S. Department of Congress that was developed to help steward America’s vital coastlines. The Coastal Services Center lends resources, information, and services to local coastal resource centers.
